Kota or home? What a year of JEE preparation really costs
Most families compare Kota and home by the coaching fee. That fee is usually the smaller half of what a Kota year costs.
The full bill for a year in Kota
| Coaching fee | ₹1L–2.5L |
| Hostel or PG, food, laundry, travel home | ₹1L–2L |
| If a parent moves too: rent and running a second home | more |
| Typical total | ₹2.5L–4.5L |
|---|
These are the ranges families tell us about; your own numbers will vary by institute and city. Our fee calculator lets you enter yours.
The costs that do not show up in rupees
- Distance from family at 15 or 16, through the hardest two years of school.
- Batches of 100–300, where a quiet student can go weeks without being asked a question.
- Board exams often get squeezed, even though they still matter for admissions and eligibility.
What studying at home usually lacks
Home has its own problem: structure. Recorded lectures and apps rarely tell a parent whether their child is actually on track, and there is no one person accountable when a chapter starts slipping.
Five questions to decide
- Does my child ask questions in a big class, or go quiet?
- Who will notice within a week if they fall behind?
- Who will I call, and will they know my child's last three test scores?
- How will I know how they are sleeping and coping?
- What does the full year cost, not just the fee?
Medha Siddhi was built around those five questions: live classes in groups of four or five, a mentor who answers to you, and a report every Sunday. For most families, a Pod costs about the same as a Kota year, and your child stays home.
